Your first time here? Welcome, I'm glad you've dropped in.... David Soul (aka Bricoleur)

Frequently Asked Questions

Who are you ?
I’m David HC Soul …
and for those of you old enough to  remember no not THAT one …
although I have been known to answer to the name Hutch.

This is a personal web site but primarily covers an number of things of interest to me in my professional life: <more>

Who may participate this weblog ?
Anyone may view the
weblog.  However, you must be logged in as a member in order to post
new items.  The postings are moderated, so there will be a slight time
lag between creation of a new item to the actual release.

What is CEP ?
“Complex Event
Processing (CEP) is an emerging technology for building and managing
information systems. The goal of CEP is to enable the information
contained in the events flowing through all of the layers of the
enterprise IT infrastructure to be discovered, understood in terms of
its impact on high level management goals and business processes, and
acted upon in real time. This includes the events created by
technologies such as RFID. CEP employs techniques such as detection of
complex patterns of many events, event correlation and abstraction,
event hierachies, and relationships between events such as causality,
membership, and timing, and event-driven processes.” –  David Luckham <more>

What is Cybernetics ?
Cybernetics is the science of control and communication in the man and the machine.

………………..

Thus
if CEP can  be considered the application of technology to enable the
information contained in the events flowing through all of the layers
of the enterprise IT infrastructure to be discovered and understood in
terms of its impact on high level management goals and business
processes (and acted upon in real time), then
Managerial Cybernetics can be thought of as the theory and practical
guidance of how the systems and communication and control processes
should be designed and applied in the first place! <more>

What are Sensor Networks ?

What is SDTN ?
Short Duration Transactions Networks
(SDTNs) are a type of data exchange in which the connection between
devices exists for a short period of time, generally a few seconds. <more>

Why do you have a section for Intellectual Property discussions?
Many who believe the
system of software patents is fatally flawed still encourage companies
to file for them as “that’s just the way things are now”.  But that
just isn’t good enough… if the system is flawed it must be
(eventually) corrected or it will destroy that which it was set up to
preserve.  …..The US Supreme court knew this when it first applied
corrective influence to a process that was out of control…. in
1882…. shame that the lessons of the past have been forgotten by the
current PTO with respect to prior art and obvious concepts in the case
of software patents ! <full story>

Why do you have a section for Privacy discussions?

Why a section on embedded systems ?

Why a section on “Errors” … and why is it labelled as “In Extremis”?

Why a section on Society ?

Why a section on Standards ?
