Human Freedom and Cybernetic Principles by Dr. Bruce Buchanan
-
Jaron Lanier, a pioneer in virtual reality, musician, and currently the lead scientist for the National Tele-Immersion Initiative, worries about the future of human culture more than the gadgets. In his “Half a Manifesto” he takes on those he terms the “c

Another Squidoo lens …. This one dedicated to exploring the work of Stafford Beer and the development of his VSM. It is especially interested in the application of cybernetics to the field of organizational design, management and control. – goto

This is my primary lens on cybernetics on Squidoo;…. the
others are meant to complement this one, and infact to allow deeper
drill down on specific sub-topics of cynernetics for those having more
deep knowledge needs. – goto

I've been participating in the Squidoo Beta …
I now have
several lenses that deal with the subjects of Cybernetics and General
Systems Theory… I'll have more posts about that later… but for now
I encourage you to have a look at the potential of Squidoo… perhaps
take a look first at 'DandyCandy: Everyones an Expert' for a great synopsis of what Squidoo is all about… then move on over to squidoo.com itself and just have a look around….. I'm sure you'll be impressed.

Anyone familiar with the work of Stafford Beer in the area of Viable Systems (VSM) will want to see the practical application of the model and the role that managerial cybernetics can play in coping with environmental complexity.
By Raul Espejo, Werner Schuuhmann, Markus Schwaninger & Ulbaldo Bilello (Wiley 1996) this book is both theoretical and practical… a rare feat that is carried off extremely well by these authors .

Building and Fire Research Laboratory Program: Cybernetic Building System
“During the next ten years, the building controls industry in the United States will be undergoing a radical change from one with a vertical structure to one with a horizontal structure. Building control companies, equipment and system manufacturers, energy providers, utilities, and design engineers will be under increasing pressure to improve performance and reduce costs. Cost reduction can be achieved by developing cybernetic building systems that integrate more and more building services, including energy management, fire and security, transportation, fault detection and diagnostics, optimal control, the real time purchase of electricity and the aggregation of building stock.”

Acccording to the cover flap,
“…an intimate look at the development of a new theory about change and learning. In wide-rangin conversations held over a year and a half, organizational learnign pioneers Peter Senge, C. Otto Sharmer, Joseph Jaworski, and Betty Sue Flowers explored the nature of transformational change — how it arises and the fresh possibilities it offers a world dangerously out of balance.”
The scope of the book is grand indeed with an aim to:
“… define the capabilities that underlie our ability to see, sense, and realize new possibilities — in ourselves, in our institutions and organizations, and in society itself.” <Doubleday 2005>

Nontechnical Infrastructure for BI Applications Article by Larissa Moss (published in DM Review Magazine January 2003)
This article is excerpted from Business Intelligence Roadmap: The Complete Project Lifecycle for Decision-Support Applications (Addison- Wesley, 2003). All material is copyrighted by Larissa Moss, Shaku Atre and Addison-Wesley.
“An enterprise infrastructure is to business intelligence (BI)
applications what a transportation infrastructure is to automobile
owners. In order to safely and comfortably travel with an automobile,
there must be a physical infrastructure, such as roads, bridges,
traffic lights and traffic signs, as well as nonphysical
infrastructure, such as standardized traffic rules and their
interpretation. For example, without the universal interpretation of
the rules “green means go” and “red means stop,” traffic lights would
be of no use. Similarly, an enterprise infrastructure consists of two
major components: ” ….

“This is a list, with reviews of suggested books, periodicals, television shows and computer programs for a classroom curriculum or individual study in cybernetics and systems theory. It does not (yet) include a course plan a glossary, or extended biliograpy. [Alan B Scrivener] was asked to write this by some teachers who received a copy of class notes [ABS] prepared for a course in 'Understanding Whole Systems' sixteen years ago at the University of Calafornia at Santa Cruz. They asked how [he] would revise it based on what [he] know[s] today. This
document answers that question.”

Fast Tracking:
Mobilize your management teams to meet the unexpected by continuously
monitoring the business environment and quickly coming up with new
solutions to threats and opportunities. by Wick Keating (Optimize: March 2003, Issue 22)
According to the author, capability that detects
problems and opportunities but leaves responding up to the traditional
task forces and executive committees, is a job only half done:
